When approaching a group of people that you want rapport with the
first thing to do is find the leader of the group. That is the
person you want to get rapport with first. The rest will follow.
Here is what to notice. How does the leader treat his group. Are
they equals? Are they followers? Are they students? Is the leader
dominant? What roles is the leader playing?… Boss, teacher,
adviser, supporter….
When you approach them you see who they want around them. If you
approach the leader in that role then they will let you into the
group. Then assume his position with the others in the group.
If he is a teacher then you want to be in the role of student when
approaching. Then when speaking to the rest of the group you want
to switch to being a bit more teacher like.
In this way you can hijack the rapport the leader has and control
the group without actually having to be the leader.
Practice assignment: Observe people in groups pf 3 or more today.
Notice who is the leader. Notice what position they occupy.
