Goals and Beliefs
Goals and Beliefs

The effects that beliefs have on goals and successful achievement of the
those goals is something to be considered. It is one of the little
stumbling blocks that might get in the way of getting your goals.

As I have said before it is very easy to set a goal. Any idiot can do it.
We've already talked about how important it is for you to have goals that
aligned themselves with your values. So let's pretend you picked a goal
that does that. So far so good.

Now what beliefs would be important. The first belief that I would like to
talk about is whether or not you believe you deserve your goal. It sounds
very basic to think about for a moment. Imagine trying to achieve a goal
that you did not really think that you deserve to attain. Now what I mean
by deserve isn't that it is owed to you. What it does mean is that if you
put the effort that is required toward achieving your goal that you deserve
to attain it.

So the question you have to ask yourself is do I deserve my goal? You'd be
surprised how many times I hear the answer "no" from people. Now I'm not
going to deal with every possible to objection on the planet. There are so
many causes for belief such as this that it would be hard to address all of
them. Let's just say that it would have to be dealt with effectively if you
really want to get your goal.

Next he would have to ask yourself if you are capable of achieving the goal.
Kim is 4 ft. 10 inches tall. To say the least he would probably be best if
she did not aspire to be pro basketball player. Think about it. Let's say
that the answer to the question is no you're not capable yet. Then he would
have a goal before the goal. You have to find out what it would take for
you to become capable. Then readjust your goal to the first step that it
would take to become capable.

If you want to become a doctor or surgeon the first up might be medical
school.

One other thing to ask might be, what current beliefs do I have to would
stand the way of me achieving my goal. This could be any thing as simple as
self doubt. We've all had self doubt that one time or another in our lives.

My first decided to teach believe me I have all kinds of self doubt. I was
asked myself questions. The questions themselves reinforced the doubt.
Stupid questions like, what if I don't know enough yet? Does what I teach
really work? What if I hold a seminar and nobody shows up? What if they
show up and they don't like what I'm teaching?

Notice how each one of these questions need further into self doubt. These
questions wandered around in my brain or a while. Then I began to turn them
in on themselves. What if I do know enough? What if what I teach really
does work? What I hold the seminar and it fills up? What they show up and
they love what I'm teaching? Asked to you these questions painted a much
different picture for me. As a matter-of-fact, it painted such a compelling
picture that there was no way that I couldn't at least make the effort.

As you can see the difference between setting goals and getting goals is
more than whether or not you write them down or tape to your mirror. A
truly successful goal getting system takes many more things into account.

Just some thoughts,

Tom
